Abuse in Sport
13% of Athletes Experienced Sexual Abuse As A Child in Sports
The World Players Association’s CARE Report found that 13% of athletes experienced one form of sexual violence at least once within sports. And, with sexual abuse severely underreported, the number is likely much higher because we know how difficult it is to disclose abuse.
Grooming in Sport
Grooming in sport occurs when a predator builds trust with an athlete in order to slowly cross boundaries, making inappropriate behavior seem normal. It’s a deliberate tactic to gain control and enable abuse.
Suspecting Abuse or Neglect
If you suspect abuse or neglect of a child in a sports or athletic setting, trust your instincts and know the resources.
Whether you’re a coach, teammate, parent, friend, or bystander, knowing how to respond when you suspect abuse or neglect is essential.
