NYC coach arrested for allegedly abusing a teen
Content Warning: Abuse in Sports
Statement from the Assist:
“The allegations that a Bronx middle school basketball coach sexually abused a 14-year-old student point to a profound failure of both oversight and trust.
To the young survivor, and other survivors who may be contemplating coming forward, and to their families: this is not your fault. We believe you. You are not alone, and you deserve safety, support, and healing.
Incidents like this are far too common and underscore the urgent need for stronger safeguards to protect young athletes. Transparent, enforceable protections must be in place, along with consistent training at every level of sport, so that adults and young people alike can recognize the tactics of power and control that signal grooming.
Schools and organizations entrusted with the care of young athletes have a responsibility to know how to identify and interrupt concerning behavior early, before abuse occurs, and to create an environment where safety is never secondary.”
